Murri Nangamai means “Many Dreams” in the Kuringgai language. This is a fitting name for the information and literary centre of our school.

All children come to the library regularly. Classroom teachers, the teacher librarian and the technology teacher plan teaching programs together, combining a knowledge of the curriculum, a knowledge of individual students’ needs and competencies and a knowledge of information sources, resources and technologies, to develop the information literacy of all our students. All learning activities are relevant and integrated with class programs and are designed to base learning on the information resources available in the library.

Through resource-based programs students develop the skills necessary for gaining intellectual access to information, acquire knowledge and understandings and use resources for personal growth and fulfillment. In particular, these programs provide students with opportunities to:

  • Develop the capacity to recognise the need for information, to know how and where to find it from a range of sources, and how to select, organise and communicate it to others;

  • Acquire the skills required to analyse, interpret, synthesise and organise information as well as the language and communication skills of reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening;

  • Develop as critical thinkers and creative problem solvers while building a dynamic view of themselves as confident and discerning information users;

  • Extend their cultural understandings and their information competencies in increasingly complex contexts, using a range of information sources, formats and technologies as an integral part of their learning;

  • Use resources including literature, to further their personal growth.

The knowledge, understandings and the necessary skills for learning are introduced developmentally and incrementally, using an Information Process. The Information Process is the series of physical and intellectual steps that anyone takes to complete an information task.

The Information Process diagram below provides a framework of sequential steps to follow.  However it is not linear.  The learner returns to earlier steps as the need becomes evident.  The interactive/integrated skills of literacy and critical thinking are integral to the process of collecting, analyzing and organizing information across all key learning areas.

Borrowing Limits

Kindergarten to Year Four may borrow three books at a time one of which must be a fiction book. In addition they may borrow one magazine.

Years Five and Six may borrow four books at a time, one of which must be a fiction book. In addition they may borrow a magazine.

Children are encouraged to choose fiction books they can read themselves.

Borrowing Time

The children are encouraged to bring their library books each week. They can renew their loan if they haven’t finished reading their books.

Care of Books.

Children are encouraged to keep their library books in a school library bag.  If a book is damaged please do not attempt to repair it at home. Send it back with a short note to alert us to the problem and we will repair it. Please do not use Sellotape on the books. It becomes sticky, stains the pages and makes them stick together.

Lost Books

Usually lost books turn up fairly quickly. If you have exhausted all avenues, eg home, classroom, after school care and Grandma’s, don’t panic! Just write a quick note, or ring the school and tell us. The item will be removed from your child’s record. After the next stocktake, the last recorded borrower of missing items will be invited to make a donation to cover the cost of replacing the t of the item.

Problems

If you or your child experiences any problems in the library please do not hesitate to ring us or send us a note so that we can sort it out quickly.

Helping in the Library

Help is always welcomed in the library! There is always shelving, sorting, covering and repairing to be done.

Opportunities also exist to help during class borrowing times.

At the beginning of the year we have a working bee to show people how we cover and repair books. Helpers can then take books home to cover.
