Schooling in NSW is organised in stages. Students in

Kindergarten are usually in Early Stage 1

Years 1 and 2 are usually in Stage 1

Years 3 and 4 are usually in Stage 2

Years 5 and 6 are usually in Stage 3

What your child learns in Early Stage 1 - Beginning school/Kindergarten

In Kindergarten the focus of learning is on basic literacy and numeracy skills acquisition. Most children in Kindergarten are in Early Stage 1 of learning. Some students, however, may be working towards learning outcomes from a stage above Early Stage 1.

What your child learns in Stage 1 - Learning in Years 1 and 2

In Stage 1 the focus of learning remains on basic literacy and numeracy skills acquisition. Most children in Years 1 and 2 are in Stage 1 of learning. Some students, however, may be working towards learning outcomes from a either a stage above Stage 1 or a stage below.

What your child learns in Stage 2- Learning in Years 3 and 4

Most children in Years 3 and 4 are in Stage 2 of learning. Some students, however, will be working towards learning outcomes from the stage above or the stage below Stage 2.

National Assessment Program Test (NAP) in Year 3

All NSW primary students in Year 3 are tested for  English, spelling, reading, writing  and numeracy in the National Assessment Program Test (NAP). Speak to your child's school for more information about assessment. This takes place in May during school hours.

What your child learns in Stage 3 - Learning in Years 5 and 6

Most children in Years 5 and 6 are in Stage 3 of learning. Some students, however, will be working towards learning outcomes from the stage above or the stage below Stage 3.

National Assessment Program Test (NAP) in Year 5

All NSW primary students in Year 5 are tested for English, spelling, reading, writing  and numeracy in the National Assessment Program Test (NAP). This takes place in May during school hours.

External Assessments

In Years 3 to 6 your child may  participate in the University of NSW Competitions, English, mathematics, science, computer, writing  and spelling. In year 4 they can sit for the Opportunity Classes (OC) placement for years 5 and 6. In year 6 students can choose to sit the Selective High Schools test.
